Getting your generator sizing correct is important, it will determine the type and number of appliances which can be powered. The starting power of appliances in most cases is considerably more than their running power. Also consider the additional loads that may be added later and whether you will need prime power or standby power. A diesel generator set will be a considerable investment for your future power security, we recommend getting a second opinion when determining the size of your generator. PR Power is more than happy to help or check out our power calculator.
We stock a range diesel generators brands including JCB, Cummins, Perkins, Kubota, Powerlink, Stamford, Leroy Somer and Deep Sea.
Prime power generators provide continuous power, serving as the primary power source in applications without access to the electrical grid. Standby power generators, on the other hand, are used as a backup source, running automatically and typically for shorter durations.

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is installed along with a standby generator to automatically transfer power from the utility when the main power fails to a standby generator. In simpler terms it directs the power sources like traffic. When the ATS detects a main source power failure it will signal the engine panel of the back-up Diesel Generator to start up the generator and to become the primary source of power. When the main source of power is restored the ATS will automatically transfer back to the utility and signal the back-up Diesel Generator to power down. Don’t be afraid to contact PR Power on how to determine the required size of the ATS required.
Fuel consumption is typically measured in litres per hour (L/hr) and depends on the generator’s load. Manufacturers often provide fuel consumption charts showing consumption rates at different load percentages.
Kilowatts (kW) real power, while kilovolt-amperes (kVA) measure apparent power. The difference accounts for the power factor, which represents the efficiency of the generator. Typically, kW = kVA x Power Factor. Read our article here.
The power factor indicates the efficiency with which the generator converts electrical power into usable work. A higher power factor (close to 1) means more efficient power usage, reducing fuel consumption and operational costs. A three phase Diesel generator will usually have a power factor of 0.8.
Yes, generators can be reconfigured to produce different voltages. Any modifications to the generator alternator must be carried out by a suitably qualified electrician.
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and reliability of your diesel generator. Speak to our team for advice on the service frequency of your generator as it varies depending on your application.
